The Writing Gym
The Writing Gym is a coaching tool that helps people become better writers by making them aware of the signals they’re sending, the tone they’re conveying, and how their audience might receive their message.
Unlike AI tools that rewrite your content, The Writing Gym guides you through structured reflection to build your writing skills over time.
How it works
- Answer pre-draft questions about your audience, intent, and concerns
- The system extracts assessment criteria from your answers
- Write your draft in a persistent editor
- Self-assess against each criterion before seeing AI feedback
- Compare your scores to the AI’s - gaps reveal blind spots
- Revise and iterate with full history visible
What it helps with
- Noticing the gap between how you think you’re coming across and how you actually are
- Building self-awareness about tone, clarity, and audience impact
- Developing a habit of structured reflection before hitting send
- Improving calibration over time through repeated self-assessment
What it doesn’t try to do
- Rewrite your content for you
- Tell you what to say
- Replace your judgement or voice
- Create dependency on AI-generated text
The philosophy
Most AI writing tools make outputs better but writers worse. People outsource thinking instead of developing skill.
The Writing Gym takes the opposite approach: coach, don’t rewrite. The value is in the reflection loop, not the AI’s suggestions.
Status and direction
Currently a working prototype with the core learning loop complete. The split-view workspace keeps your draft visible alongside a scrollable history of iterations and assessments.
Next steps include iteration gating (require 3 rounds before unlocking AI rewrites), session persistence, and exploring a freemium model for saved scenarios and calibration tracking.
